Round 2 of LDGs

Today we met in small guided reading groups to do book previews for each group's next book for their literature discussion groups (LDGs). Now that students have learned to read their assigned pages, flag their thoughts, and write about their thoughts, our reading block definitely has taken on a 'workshop' feel. Here you can see some students reading, some students flagging, and some students responding in their Thoughtful Logs. This makes independent reading time so much more purposeful. Students got their first reading assignment today and will discuss their assigned pages on Monday.

Homework:
1. Reading - 15 mins., Finish LDG response
2. Social Studies - Study for test on Tuesday
3. $2 for bowling by next Friday

  1. I love this. Seriously, LOVE. I am off to read the rest of your series on LDGs. I would love to get this going in my class.

  2. Okay, I'll admit it... I'm just dying to know:
How do you attach those papers/prompts/etc into the notebooks?
    Tape, glue stick, other?
And: Do you do it or do the students attach them?
I know, that is probably the least curriculum-centered, least "rigorous" question anyone has ever asked you, but I have been wondering since LAST summer!

    Happy WEEKEND!

  3. The bath tub makes me think of my 4th grade teacher! We had one in her room too!

  4. Kim - The kids do it themselves. I pre-cut the sheets to the perfect size (cut of all extra white margin border) so all the kids have to do is glue. They use glue sticks they keep in their desks. It takes no more than a minute. I have them open to the next open page of the correct tab in their Thoughtful Logs and BAM - it gets done. :)

  5. I love all of your stuff - so inspiring :) Curious about your curriculum ... do you have a specific program for either your reading or writing or is a collaboration of things you have created?

  6. sorry more questions :)!
Do you create each of your sheets that you give the students to glue into their notebooks or do they come from a resource? I LOVE your text feature lessons! How long did you spend on each text feature. My curriculum has me spending only one day on each ... doesn't seem like enough to me ...

  7. Mrs. B - We don't have a specific curriculum that we follow. We basically have a big ol' list of the things we're expected to teach in a year, and the rest is up to us. I can't even tell you the number of teachers who are craving exactly what you're talking about though. It's like we're all reinventing the wheel! Regarding the sheets the kids glue in their Thoughtful Logs - I make all of them. Although I'm not going to lie that lately, writing a book seems more and more appealing. My brain is always going a mile a minute, and I wish I could share and talk to everyone about what they are! :) I typically spend 1-2 days on the text features...
